MAP NO 2: CRIMINAL LAW REFORM

This is the map of criminal law reform. It is designed to reveal how, when and to what extent the criminal laws of Lithuania and other post-Soviet countries have changed, comparing them with the changes in the Soviet criminal law (Stalinist and Post-Stalin).

We recommend to start your research using the tool, to find Soviet Russia – which is located in the map under the geographic territory of Russia. From there on, you can zoom in and out to all other post-Soviet countries and, pushing on a blue icon, make comparisons on:

  1. Crime Concepts in the Criminal Codes.
  2. The remaining features of the Soviet criminal law concepts.
  3. Comparisons on retroactive features of the new legal systems.

The map also demonstrates, when the new criminal codes were adopted in the new post-Soviet countries (click the play button at the bottom of the map): as the years progress, the colorful icons light up during the adoption of the new criminal codes – that way showing the process of “decolonization” in time.

The map reveled some important trends and tendencies. For instance, in the Baltic Countries the crimes against humanity and genocide, since the adoption of the new codes, are the most important – as even the retroactivity of law does not apply in these cases.
